Learning Beyond the Screen: How April’s Hybrid Day at MU Prep Brought Online Education to Life

Stories & Spotlights

Hands-on learning: Marian University Preparatory School students brought their online lessons to life during April’s Hybrid Day with environmental science activities and valuable in-person connections.

The April Hybrid Day Experience offered an immersive look into the natural world, combining science, exploration, and community-building through a unique series of environmental experiences.

Hands-On Learning: Restoration in Action

The day started with an environmental restoration activity led by Taylor Lehman, Marian University’s restoration ecologist. Students weren’t just observers but active participants in restoring and protecting local habitats. By pulling invasive species, planting native ones, and learning how these efforts impact biodiversity, students gained a practical understanding of environmental science beyond what a textbook can offer.

These activities helped reinforce key science standards and fostered a deeper connection between the students and the ecosystems they studied. It was a powerful example of how online learning can be amplified through real-life applications, allowing students to “dig in” to what they’re learning and see its value firsthand.

Exploring Ecology with Cutting-Edge Technology

In the afternoon, students entered the Nina Mason Pulliam Ecolab to engage in a unique turtle-tracking activity. Marian’s head ecologist guided them to use radio telemetry equipment to locate eastern box turtles fitted with tiny transmitters.

This hands-on ecology lesson blended scientific investigation with conservation ethics. Students learned how the data collected helps researchers monitor turtle health, understand their behavior, and improve habitat protection efforts. It was an exciting way to connect classroom content with modern research tools—and for many, it sparked new interest in future careers in science and environmental studies.

Building Friendships and Confidence Through Social Connection

“I love the days we get to be together,” one student said. “I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything—these are the days I remember most.”

Sharing lunch, walking the campus, working in teams, and participating in Mass all helped students’ bond in ways that supported their emotional development and overall school experience. Hybrid Day Experiences ensure that MU Prep students don’t just feel like part of a classroom—they feel like part of a community.

A Model for the Future of Online Learning

The success of April’s Hybrid Day Experience reflects MU Prep’s commitment to providing a well-rounded, faith-centered, and future-ready education. Through thoughtfully designed in-person opportunities, students benefit from the best of both worlds: the flexibility and focus of online learning, paired with engaging, real-world experiences that leave a lasting impact.

As online education continues to evolve, MU Prep is leading the way in showing how hybrid learning can create academic success, personal growth, meaningful connections, and unforgettable learning moments.
